In our General English program, you will focus on improving your reading, writing, speaking, listening, and pronunciation, as well as improving on and learning new grammar. A wide range of classes and levels ensures that you will be placed with students of the same ability.

Tuition: 15 hours per week, focused on improving reading, writing, speaking, listening, and pronunciation skills in a dynamic, engaging environment.
Class Schedule: Monday to Friday, two options: 09:30 – 12:45 or 13:15 – 16:30, with an additional 2 optional hours of conversation class.
Start Date: Available any Monday, excluding Bank Holidays.
Duration: Minimum stay of 1 week.
Age Requirement: 18 years and above.
Class Size: Maximum of 10 students, except during high season.
Levels: 6 Levels available, from A1 (Elementary) to C2 (Proficiency).

What are the classes like?

Classes are split into two sessions every day. You’ll have a different teacher for each class. This gives students a chance to experience different accents, different skills, and different teaching styles.

Classes at Active Language Learning are taught with a strong focus on real-world communication. In your class, you can expect to have lots of pair and group work, giving you as many opportunities as possible to use the English you are learning. Students at ALL come from all around the world, so you will be able to use your English with people from other cultures.

Teachers like to bring in materials that are interesting for students, such as newspapers, magazines, short videos, and even TED talks. At ALL, we believe that the best way to learn is through relevant and up-to-date material. There is also a cultural focus in class – you can expect to learn about Irish culture, music, and food.

Progress

Depending on your level and the length of your course, you may change your level during your time in the school. Students can change their level following advice from their teacher or following a progress test. Students are welcome to talk to the Academic Manager at any time if they feel a class is too easy, or too difficult.

With this in mind, we organize social activities every week to create lots of opportunities for students to get together socially to speak English outside the classroom. We have a conversation class twice a week, so you can chat with different teachers, as well as students at different levels. We run sports events such as football and rugby afternoons. We also organize different themed school parties so you can chat socially. Cultural excursions are also offered weekly and encouraged as part of the school ethos, where using your newly developing English skills are brought into real practice.

Work & Study – General English

General English classes at Active Language Learning are offered to students of all levels (from Beginners to Proficiency) and are designed to improve fluency in order to allow the learner to communicate fluently in the target language. Our General English courses also prepare students to study/work through the medium of English.

Class levels follow the scale set by the Common European Framework (CEF: A0-C2). Upon arrival students take a level placement test and are also given an oral interview. They are then placed in a class with others of their level. The syllabus has a 12 week cycle in which a core text book is followed for a part of the class. Supplementary materials are widely used, with particular focus on Irish and authentic materials. Authentic listening material, e.g. from television, internet or radio, is encouraged in class. Language practice is in context and emphasis is placed on communicative ability.

We focus on student-centred learning and employ methodologies which promote communication and practical language usage such as TBL (Task-based Learning), CLT (Communicative Language Teaching), Lexical and Functional theories.

Foundation Course

Why should I choose foundation course?

Students who wish to study at university in Ireland, or elsewhere in the English speaking world, usually need to provide proof of their English language proficiency. This course is designed to help students meet the standard required by their chosen university and / or course.

Our Foundation course will give students the English language skills they need to complete university degree in English. As well as preparing students to write academic essays and listen to longer lectures, students also learn about Irish culture to ensure they know what to expect when starting university.

The foundation course is designed to take students to an IELTS band 7.

What are the classes like?

From 9.30 to 12.45 or from 13.15 to 16.30 daily students focus on academic skills, general language skills and cultural items.

Do you have an exam to pass and you need some help getting there? At Active, we offer exam preparation for Cambridge PET, Cambridge First, Cambridge Advanced, IELTS and TIE exams. Our teachers will give you the skills you need to achieve a good result. As well as improving your English, these classes focus on exam-taking strategies for you to maximise your potential.

What are the classes like?

Our exam preparation classes take place from 9.30 to 11.30 daily. Depending on your level, we will recommend an exam for you.

You will use a course book specifically designed for your chosen exam. The teacher will also use extra materials and past papers.

Our intensive English programme is our general English course plus three hours of private classes. The intensive English programme is a great way to get the individual attention you need to deal with ingrained errors. Private classes are also a great way to learn and practice the specialised vocabulary and/or skills you need for your job.

This, coupled with our General English programme, focussing on improving your reading, writing, speaking, listening and pronunciation, as well as improving on and learning new grammar provides and intensive and rewarding learning experience. A wide range of classes and levels ensures that you will be placed with students of the same ability.

Private classes are organised at your convenience – normally on Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoons. Depending on your needs we will assign you the teacher who is best able to help you.

English For Academic Purposes (EAP)

Why should I choose EAP?

If you would like to improve your academic skills in a dynamic, engaging environment, this is the course for you. In our English for Academic Purposes programme you will focus on all skills, with special emphasis on improving your writing, especially essay writing skills and listening to lectures and taking notes. EAP is available only to level B1+ students.

What are the classes like?

Classes are split into two 2-hour sessions every day. You’ll have a different teacher for each class. This gives students a chance to experience different accents, different skills and a different teaching style. In your first class you will prepare for the IELTS exam.

Classes at Active Language Learning are taught with a strong focus on real-world communication. In your class, you can expect to have lots of pair and group work, giving you as many opportunities as possible to use the English you are learning. A Bildungsurlaub course at ALL.

30 hours per week

The German government funds employees in some states of Germany to undertake five to ten paid days of educational leave per year under the “Bildungsurlaub” programme. Active Language Learning is authorised by many states to offer these courses.

German students who would like to study on a Bildungsurlaub course at Active Language Learning can take one of our English for Bildungsurlaub courses. Our intensive course is recognized as Bildungsurlaub in many German states. German employees get up to 2 weeks paid leave to participate in this course.

Our intensive course is ideal for Bildungsurlaub students, and consists of :

22 hours per week classes in small groups
3 hours of private classes
5 hours of cultural program

The 5 hours of cultural program are optional for other participants, for clients of Bildungsurlaub they are obligatory in order to fulfil the required 30 hours per week.

English For Specific Purposes (ESP)

Monday to Friday, 09:30-14:00

These courses are designed based on the language level and particular area of expertise of the English Language student. ESP can be taken in a closed group or on a one-to-one basis. Students will usually attend two hours of General English, appropriate to their proficiency level, in the morning. This is followed by classes focusing on the vocabulary, idioms, communication methods and culture of their chosen field in the afternoon.

We are happy to tailor courses and provide experienced teachers for any additional specific areas which students might choose to study.

Hourly private tuition on demand or group courses.

Individual or group tuition based on needs analysis and with a syllabus tailor-made for the client. Private lessons usually take place in the afternoon and are offered on an hourly basis. Specialist areas include law, medicine, military and Business English.

One to One Classes
